Today, I joined a group of senior citizens while they took their dogs for a walk along a secluded back road in the Sierra National Forest.

Early in the morning, three friends and I, including two members of the Sierra Hiking Seniors Group, gathered and carpooled to the group’s rendezvous point, a grocery store parking lot. Following brief introductions, we set off for our hiking destination: Sivels Orchard, a century-old, deserted apple orchard. This was my first hike with the group, and I found it quite enjoyable.

The spirited dogs leaped ahead as we embarked on the dusty trail. At their master’s call, they returned with ears perked, anticipating the reward that awaited them.

The walk through the shady forest was pleasant, and I enjoyed meeting and talking with several women, all who love hiking.

But the highlight of the morning was walking through the sunlit orchard where apples, pears and plums grew.

Many people picked bags full of the little red and green apples.

I took a few as well, enough to make a big bowl of applesauce.

Afterwards, the spent dogs sprawled in the dirt as the coordinators of the hike treated us to snacks and drinks.

I look forward to continuing my participation in the Friday Hikes with this vibrant group of elders and their dogs.
