May Lake, Yosemite National Park
Total distance walked: 3.72 miles
With temperatures at home expected to soar into the low 100s, my sister and I ventured to the higher elevations seeking refuge at May Lake where the weather was a refreshing 66 degrees.
The parking area was packed, a testament to the reopening of the High Sierra Camp. Our mission was to capture intriguing subjects for our photography group. For my sister, it marked her inaugural visit to the lake. She found the trail more challenging than our previous excursion to Luken’s Lake.
As we walked, I pointed out the changes I saw that have occurred over time, such as a fallen tree that has become more decayed. I also highlighted the aspects that have remained the same: Mt. Hoffmann’s reflection in the water. She noticed an interesting hole in a tree that I hadn’t seen before. It seemed like an ideal spot for an owl to make its nest.
Walking the lake’s perimeter, we discovered numerous secluded spots for quiet reflection. The stillness was noticeable even amidst the energy of the backpackers and campers. A gentle breeze occasionally stirred the water, causing it to lap against the shore.
Having explored this place many times before with Chris, other friends, and even by myself, I entertained (or perhaps annoyed) my sister with stories of past adventures. Our hike will now be a precious gem in my treasure of memories.
If possible, take a peek at this pristine lake. For photographers, it’s a must-see and well worth the short, uphill hike.
