Autumn Has Returned

November 1, 2013
Yosemite Valley, Yosemite National Park

The autumn days have returned, and so has Andrew. Our youngest son, after four months of studying and exploring in Australia, wished to visit Yosemite immediately upon his return. Julia also returned from college, and by Friday, we were on our way to Yosemite Valley.

The fall day was perfect beyond our wishes, with a sky of unblemished blue. The golden leaves stood out vividly against the evergreens and the dormant meadows.

We stopped for photos at the LeConte Memorial Lodge, a designated National Historic Landmark. Inside, there’s a library brimming with books about nature.

The November air was cool and crisp, yet the warmth of a crackling fire embraced us as we entered the Ahwahnee Hotel.

At the bar, we selected an outdoor table bathed in the autumn sunlight and enjoyed a platter of antipasti and smoked fish. Drinking age in Australia is 18. Here, Andrew had to make do with a hot chocolate.

After our snacks, we strolled along the forested trail, passing by the cabins, until we reached the tranquil river.

This quick valley trip triggered my desire to get out and hike again…soon, I hope.

  1. Looks like a great day in paradise and what a nice family outing. Nice that Andrew’s back and the Julia and Chris joined you.
